A homemade project doesn't need to be the cheapest option to be worthwhile. Taste, customization, time with your family, and the pleasure of learning all count—but they aren't the same as dollar savings.
COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE
Use the same number of servings, the same finished quantity, and a similar quality. A small handmade gift and a large store-bought set are different things.
COUNT THE LITTLE THINGS
Include the amount of each ingredient or material you use, packaging, and optional energy or delivery costs. If a project needs a new tool, decide whether to include its full cost or a clearly stated share.
YOUR TIME MATTERS, TOO
Keep hands-on time separate from waiting time. Let a project be a hobby when that is its value; you don't have to call every homemade choice a money-saving hack.
TRY YOUR OWN COMPARISON
The calculator below starts blank so you can use your own prices. It compares one finished homemade batch with the equivalent store-bought amount.
